Arriving at the decision to do a little reorganisation, redecoration or remodelling of your kitchen can sometimes seem like you are cooking up a storm of problems. If you’ve ever felt too overwhelmed to try an overhaul of the kitchen, this approach to the challenge might help.

Rather than contemplating the kitchen as one big project, break it down into small, manageable and practical mini-projects. Trying to do everything at once is a sure-fire way to get you hot under the collar without being anywhere near an oven.

To begin with, have a plan. Focus on what you want to achieve with certain aspects of the kitchen by answering a few basic questions.

What do you need to improve?

It’s not always the case that each part of your kitchen calls for improvement. You have thoughts of what you’d like done but occasionally financial constraints won’t allow it therefore be honest and realistic about what has to change. A quick reorganisation of the kitchen will usually enable you to understand what’s lacking or what needs adding to.

Do you have adequate storage?

Most people will answer ‘no’ to this question since we generally all want additional places to store things. Nevertheless, despite an entire redesign you might find space is tight (particularly in smaller galley kitchens) so consider what extra kind of storage you need – more space for kitchen appliances? Extra storage for food? Extra wine storage? Spice racks?

New units?

In a perfect world it would be nice to have totally new kitchen units however the time and cost involved may be prohibitive to some people. Fear not, a major overhaul of your cupboards isn’t always necessary and you are able to produce a dramatic transformation simply by painting existing units or by replacing doors or door furniture. Of course, if money and time is not the issue, new units can set the style and tone of the kitchen – just consider how the new look integrates with the rest of your home.

What do you do in your kitchen?

Not such an unusual question to ask but maybe it requires breaking down into parts:

Do you like to cook? In which event you need a good food preparation area and all your appliances within a practical distance. If cooking a large meal is currently a major hassle then maybe it’s time for a more substantial range cooker and some more work surface space. If space is tight take full advantage of what you have with extra worktop storage.

Is it the family hub? For many families, the kitchen is where everybody congregates so perhaps a central island can be built to give you additional countertop space, storage and somewhere for everybody to sit and stay out of the way!

Does the kitchen have a dual purpose? In some homes the kitchen is also a place to study or entertain. If that’s the case you’ll want a larger area for eating or even a separate desk for working at.

Have you thought about the walls?

One of the dramatic modifications you can make to any room in your home is a change of wall colour and the same applies to the kitchen. Kitchen wallpaper goes one step further than mere colour by adding textures if you wish. Wallpapering is a cost-effective way to create a new design but with the least effort. You’ll be amazed how much difference it makes when the walls are redone.

Hopefully these tips will go some way to making the process of redoing the kitchen slightly easier. Go to it with a positive attitude and a plan and you’ll have a new look faster than you think!

Most people think that the use of the sun’s power goes back to only the collection panels we use today to charge our battery operated systems. Solar power history goes back to 400 BC.

Native Americans and Greeks were among the earliest users of the sun’s power. They used it for heating their homes. Romans learned that glass could aid in the collection of the sun’s rays.

The glass panels were gathered into small greenhouse type outbuildings and seeds were planted and grown inside. Their season for growth was longer and they could start their gardens earlier than ever before.

Native Americans were using solar power from around the year 400 BC. They built homes into the sides of mountains and hills so that they could capture the sun in the daytime. Then the heat would escape in the night and be collected once again in the daytime.

Greeks used the sun in much the same way, although they did not get the idea from each other. Societies independently figured out that the sun was a useful resource that should not be wasted.

That was the extent of the use of the sun for several hundred more years. In the late 1700’s a man named Horace de Saussare designed a device that collects sunlight. The collector cone gathered the sun to boil ammonia. The result was refrigerant. Scientists were enthralled with this new idea all the way throughout the 1800’s.

Solar power history also includes the use of the steam engine. The first ones used solar power, but were very expensive to operate. They had a difficult time in keeping the engine running. The scientific community saw the value and potential of solar energy, so they continued looking for an answer that worked. In the late 1800’s a cell was successfully built and the rest is history.

Being a ‘transient space’ has its disadvantages as homeowners would rather spend time, money and effort on decorating ‘living spaces’. That’s a real shame because it’s the first part of your house that visitors are greeted by and who doesn’t want to create the best first impression? With some forward planning, the right wallcoverings, lighting and storage, your hallway can acquire the wow! factor.

Colours and coverings

Selecting the most appropriate colours can help make the entrance to your home as light and attractive as possible. Dark hallways can be a bad idea in smaller homes so heavy and strong colours on the wall need to be avoided. On the other hand, should you live in a period property that has far more space, then classic colours that are in keeping with the general décor (like greens and reds) can enrich the look. For narrow spaces, select neutral colours on the wall.

Changing the colour on the walls will make a significant impact on the sense of space. Some people like to continue the colour scheme used in connecting rooms while others select a colour that complements and gives a different look. Wallpaper has undergone a huge design revolution recently and wallcoverings with neutral colours and embossed designs look fantastic. If you’d rather paint but need a cool feel, wall stickers can bring some interest to the walls.

Adding to the walls

With many hallways being narrow and long there’s usually a premium on floor space so utilise the walls to create your design statement. A properly placed mirror reflects light and helps to make your hallway look bigger – given the space is the entrance/exit point of the home, a mirror also allows everyone to check how they look when coming or going.

Photos are also a great idea to give your home an individual touch. Black and white prints offer a real chic appearance while a selection of different sized photo frames give your hallway a gallery feel. If you’re going to add a piece of art to the walls, make sure it will be lit correctly to benefit from the full effect – a long, narrow picture light will provide you with the right look.

Get the right light

As with other spaces in your house, natural light is always preferable so if possible use glazing in interior doors to permit light to enter the hallway from other rooms. For artificial light you’ll want to consider the height of your ceilings. For people with low ceilings, wall uplighters will give the impression of height while for taller hallways you can install feature lighting like pendant lights or a luxurious chandelier.

Storage space

As you enter and exit the home you will need a place to hang up your coat, pick up your keys and grab your shoes and bags so a few hallway storage pieces can make life easier, keep everything tidy and look great too.

For your hats and coats, wall hooks are ideal for compact spaces while a coat stand looks great if you have more floor space to play with. Keep all your keys, letters and small items to hand with a wall storage unit and prevent people tripping over discarded shoes with a shoe storage unit

Nothing compares to a comfortable outing on a warm summers day. For relief from the midday sun and the harmful effects of UV exposure, some form of shade is an absolute necessity and this where an outdoor canopy comes into its own, protecting you from those wonderful summer rays while even giving you someplace out of the sun to store your food and drink.

They’re great for nature outings or camping trips. While conventional tents provide you with very reasonable shelter, they are somewhat cramped and don’t give you much freedom of movement or the ability to experience nature while keeping an eye on the kids.

Most good canopies are waterproof, so you won’t have to worry about finding a place out of the rain if mother nature decides to give you a surprise. To prevent all present to having a giggle at your expense, always ensure that your canopy is firmly secured, sudden gusts of wind can play havoc on your sense of humor.

Outdoor canopies come in various sizes, shapes and also with or without removable side panels. Being able to fit or remove the side panels can be very useful, especially if the weather changes suddenly, or through the course of the day. This is also great for a bit of privacy or some protection from the nighttime cold. Bigger canopies are great for those group outings where many people will need a seat out of the sun, while the smaller ones are great for a small family outing.

Most canopies are very easy to assemble and they come in a variety of configurations involving telescopic or assembled poles and the waterproof canopy. The newer and more advanced types are mechanical marvels that simply and easily fold away into a bag with no parts that can go missing, and no assembly required.

An outdoor canopy is surprisingly easy to assemble, lightweight, pack up very small and will fit into nearly any vehicle. This makes it easy and useful to either leave it in your car’s trunk, or in the garage. You can keep it on hand for a spontaneous occasion or for a quick visit to your favorite fishing spot after work.

Conventional and some unconventional types of canopies can be found almost anywhere that there’s fun in the sun. They can be useful at the waterside when fishing, boating, swimming or simply relaxing on a day at the beach. For sporting events, a day outing, in the garden to enjoy a wonderful day, or simply as occasional shaded parking for your car.

Do you live in Okauchee and want a outdoor canopy? Well, if you do you need to refer purchasing from the outdoor canopy Okauchee. The inventory of canopies can help you get what you want quick and easy.

Any homeowner who is looking to decorate will eventually come across the dilemma of whether to have hardwood floors or carpeted flooring. This can certainly be a difficult decision and there are certain benefits to both options. If you are looking into getting hardwood floors then here are some of the benefits of doing so.

The most obvious of these is simply the fact that the sorts of laws are a lot more durable. Let’s think about what happens when you have kids and pets running around on carpets. The chance of having some sort of spill some sort of stain is very high and as a result of this the carpet can often be ruined and will need to be replaced.

Does this situation occur with hardwood flooring? Not at all. Any sort of mess that is created can easily be cleaned up before it becomes a problem and as such there will be no need to take any further action. Not only is this more convenient but it will allow you to save costs and money involved with cleaning and possibly replacing carpets.

Another benefit would be the style and design of having hardwood flooring. When you have carpet in your home this can become dated after a number of years and as such you may have to replace the entire set. However, this is not the case with hard floors. There may well be trends and different styles, but they tend to last a lot longer.

Of course, most people who go to carpets will usually give the comfort factor. Walking around on nice warm carpets is usually better than walking on hard floors, particularly during the winter when they can become very cold.

This in itself will allow you to benefit from certain things. For example, as mentioned above if there is a problem with a single rug then this can simply be removed. In addition, if you simply want to change the fashion and the layout of the room then you can simply purchase a new rug and swap them over easily and without hassle.

Looking for hardwood floors in the Dallas area? visit Wood & Floors Outlet for 30-60% Off the typical local retail flooring store.

The king of range cookers is without doubt the AGA. First introduced to England in 1929, it quickly became the cooker of choice for English society, particularly for those who lived in medium and large country houses.

The king of range cookers is without doubt the AGA. First introduced to England in 1929, it quickly became the cooker of choice for English society, particularly for those who lived in medium and large country houses. Now the AGA range cooker, and the versatile Rayburn range cooker, can be found in rural and urban homes up and down the country.

One of the main questions asked by anyone looking to invest in one of these cookers is “what’s the difference between an AGA and a Rayburn?” In this article we’ll explain the basics.

Aga cookers explained

Since its original design, the AGA cooker has been manufactured in the same way, using cast iron for the oven casing and enamel for the frontage and oven doors. These materials give every single cooker a unique characteristic surface and a durability that will last for decades.

Underneath the classic looks is a heat storage cooker that steadily transfers heat from the core to the oven and hotplates so it’s always ready to cook. The high insulation levels of the outer casing combined with the hallmark insulated covers over the hotplates ensure that fuel is used economically. The AGA oven can be powered by a number of heat sources including gas (natural or propane), oil or electricity but whatever you choose, the cooking characteristics remain the same.

While remaining true to its traditions, technology hasn’t been forgotten and the Aga now has cutting edge components to ensure its working life continues to have longevity while also conforming to environmental standards. In 2006, AGA introduced the AGA Intelligent Management System (AIMS) to help ensure the correct amount of power is available when you need it. This results in fuel savings by having active periods in the day when you need the right temperatures for cooking and ‘holiday’ modes when you want the cooker to stay on low energy settings or even shut off while you’re away.

If you prefer the idea of a conventional oven, grill and hob but want the styling of an Aga then you needn’t miss out on this iconic cooker. AGA conventional cookers have all the features of a conventional oven but the timeless looks of a classic AGA.

Rayburn cookers explained

You may have heard people say that an Aga can provide hot water and central heating to your home. To all intents and purposes this is true but what they are actually referring to is a Rayburn cooker. The Rayburn is the versatile workhorse of the Aga family and certain models can indeed provide your home with heating and/or hot water.

Built using the same materials and exacting standards as the AGA, the Rayburn is supplied in either a cooking only option or as a range cooker that also provides you with heating and/or hot water. The Rayburn cookers can be powered by oil, natural gas, propane gas or wood and solid fuel with the option of either a conventional flue or power flue. Your next choice is between the cooking only Cookmaster range or the versatile Heatranger series.

The Cookmaster uses the same indirect heat technology as the Aga to provide cooking that will retain all the natural flavours and juices of food rather than allowing it to dry out. This gives you healthier and more delicious eating. The Rayburn Heatranger series gives you all the features of the Cookmaster but with the added benefits of hot water and/or central heating. This saves you space by having all your needs for a home environment but in one compact unit. The thermostatically controlled unit automatically maintains a constant temperature transforming your kitchen and home into a welcoming and warm place to live.

Buying an Aga cooker. Questions to ask when you buy an electric, gas or oil Aga oven or range cooker.

Without doubt there is one name that is synonymous with quality in the kitchen and that is AGA. Since its invention in the 1920s, the AGA cooker has not only provided a great way to cook food, it’s also offered a warming focal point in the kitchen for family and friends to gather around. Don’t just take our word for it, a recent survey revealed that sixty per cent of British women aged 25-35 would love an AGA cooker at the heart of their kitchen and celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver, Rick Stein and Antony Worrall Thompson swear by theirs.

An AGA oven is an investment that will last you a lifetime but what should you ask when buying an AGA ? Here are some questions to consider asking a supplier of AGA cookers before you buy.

Does the AGA cooker come with a guarantee and servicing?

AGA cookers are built with quality materials and the construction should last a lifetime if taken care of properly through regular servicing. However, there may be the rare occasion when your AGA develops a problem so you need to ensure that the company you buy your oven from has a guarantee in place to cover any unforeseen issues.

Make sure you’re covered by a guarantee and ask how long that cover will last. Will a replacement oven be provided if the malfunction can’t be fixed at your home and does the guarantee cover parts and labour? Is there emergency breakdown cover available for times when you’re left without a running AGA during difficult circumstances?

A regular AGA service is important to help keep it running efficiently and prolonging the life of your oven. Ask the supplier if they have qualified engineers who can visit your home and service your oven whether it’s an electric AGA , gas AGA or oil AGA . Be aware that servicing may incur additional costs such as an ongoing yearly charge.

Are there any accessories I should buy with my Aga?

Your AGA is a quality piece of kitchen equipment so wouldn’t you want some quality AGA cookware to accompany it? There are utensils, cast-iron baking dishes and kettles specifically designed for AGA cooking so ask your supplier what they stock and what they recommend.

Who installs my Aga cooker?

A gas or oil burning AGA oven must be installed by a properly registered and trained engineer for safety reasons so check that your supplier is able to do this after you purchase your cooker. An AGA is designed to be assembled once it arrives at your home but it may turn up fully assembled so again ask what will happen so you can prepare the area. A fully assembled AGA can be quite a size so bear in mind that access to your kitchen must be large enough for the cooker to fit through.

Are there any hidden costs when buying an Aga?

Make sure your supplier makes you aware of all the costs you will incur when buying an AGA . What will be the cost of delivery? Will there be an extra charge for assembly? AGA cookers are available in different colours so does that affect the amount you pay? Be clear about the overall costs so you don’t end up paying more than you first thought.

What sort of customer support is offered?

Even though you’re likely to get trouble-free use of your AGA there may be times when you want to speak with someone about a specific function or problem. Ask your supplier if they have customer support or an expert who you can get in touch with who can provide you with the information you need. It could be as simple as cleaning advice or a specific temperature setting, but after-sales support is important in helping you get the most out of your AGA .

Knitting really is one of the worlds’ oldest hobbies and there are a few reasons why knitting needles continue to click throughout the world. One of the main reasons is due to the fact that it is a productive, yet extremely relaxing pastime.

There are many people that knit to make money and then there are those that knit for their family members and to give as gifts to either family or friends. The most wonderful kind of knitting comes from the heart, and each year, thousands of enthusiasts knit babies booties, shawls and gorgeous cardigans that they then donate to raffles, maternity wards in hospitals and for local charities.

If knitting has been your hobby for a long time, chances are you are familiar and confident with all types of knitting patterns, knitting accessories, knitting kits, and have worked with various types of wool knitting yarn.

Over the years you will have developed your own personal taste when it comes to choosing the type of wool knitting yarn that you find the most enjoyable to work with. This could also be true in regards to the knitting patterns that you use, as once you are really happy with one particular brand of pattern, chances are you will look for future patterns by shopping with this brand in mind.

For beginners that can’t wait to get their hands on a pair of needles to enjoy this wonderful hobby and start creating, you might find it worthwhile to start searching for your knitting patterns, wools and accessories online. A lot of information is currently available on the web, so you will not only be able to gather your supplies for the best price, you will also have access to tips and tricks as well.

These suggestions can often be invaluable to a beginner, as they are the result of many years of trial and error. Instead of making those mistakes as you go, you will have been pre-warned! You will of course still make mistakes, such as dropping a stitch or misreading the pattern, but hopefully this will only be occasionally and dwindle to rarely, as you become more experienced.

When selecting your wool knitting yarn, it is important to have a look around at some of the latest trends in knitting, even though you may already have a favourite. Choosing something different such as alpaca wool yarn, could really add a whole other dimension to your future projects. The possibilities of Alpaca knitwear is really only limited to your own creativity! Beginners could start with an alpaca scarf, or a pair of alpaca socks. For the more advanced knitters, there are some really new and fresh patterns around, and very soon you could be looking extremely snug and cosy in your hand knitted alpaca coat!

Searching online will provide you with the greatest range of top quality alpaca wool yarn, or any yarn for that matter, and it will also ensure you see the widest range of colours and ply’s available. The worlds oldest hobby just keeps on getting better and better as the years go by.

And whether you believe it or not, the fact still remains that you can save on your utility bills and help do your bit against pollution by undertaking some simple changes in and around your home. This can include installing Double glazed windows – where two sheets of glass are separated by a thin vacuum (or gas-filled space) to reduce the amount of cool or warm air entering or leaving your house. Double glazing can mean in winter your heater is not wasting its time by warming the air only to have it escape through the glass in your windows. Or, cool air filtering into your house won’t need to be heated, thus decreasing your bills. The reverse applies in summer. The cool air is kept in, and the warm outside air is kept out. When you think about it, it makes sense. Even if you don’t care much for saving the planet, you will more than likely care for the money leaking from your pocket – and double glazing can help stem that flow.

Another area you can save money is by cutting back on the amount of maintenance you do around your property. Imagine simply enjoying your home and not planning the next painting job – and who actually likes taking doors off their hinges, painting them, and then the arguments as you try to re-hang them, lining up the screw holes and the attempts keeping the door exactly this many inches off the floor while you do it. UPVC (or unplasticised polyvinyl chloride, as opposed to PVC, or polyvinyl chloride), is gaining popularity in the construction industry, particularly UPVC doors and windows, especially when double glazed windows are installed (or, in older buildings, when single glazed windows are replaced with double glazed). UPVC is also being used in the production of fascias and soffits, meaning less upkeep. And the big plus is that they won’t warp, rot or flake, so what you get is what you’ll have in many years’ time.

You can get quotes to have your older fascias and soffits replaced with newer UPVC, and they come in a range of colours and finishes. Ensure that when you call for a quote, though, the company sources their products locally and not from overseas (especially the states) as this will help keep costs down. And the time and place has to be convenient to you. It would be best, and it would make sense, if the sales person came to you, so they can measure up and give the best price – not something they make up on the phone. They will also be able to answer any questions you have on the spot, which only goes to demonstrate their expertise!

I’m based in Cheshire and cover the whole of the county and the North Staffordshire area. My contemporary and children’s murals at www.kidswallmurals.co.uk are an exciting and original alternative to wallpaper as well as a cost effective solution to re-decorating a room.

Whether it’s to theme a nursery, update a child’s room or enhance a living space, you can have any style or design, tailored to suit your specific taste and budget.

The Design

As an experienced muralist, all of my murals are drawn free hand with no stencilling or projections involved. This allows me to transfer your ideas directly onto the wall with no scale or design restriction. I can work to all scales and budgets, producing either simple colourful wall murals to enhance a style of room – or completely theme a room in intricate detail. No project is too large or too small, and every project is treated with the same personal care and attention. When producing an interior scheme I can either translate your specific ideas directly or if you would prefer I can produce imaginative design creations for you. You may already have a room decorated and decide you want to take details from a border, curtains or duvet cover and create a mural to finish the room off.

The Price

There are a number of factors to consider that will determine the price of any given mural. The size of the mural, the detail, the wall texture and whether or not there is a ceiling involved – all have an impact on the costs. Prices start from as little as £65.00, so please use my contact page or phone me directly to arrange for a free consultation or guide price over the phone.

I am a fully qualified designer specialising in hand painted murals for interiors. I have always been creative and started painting murals when I was 14 in my own bedroom and then I found all of my friends wanted one. I went on to University and qualified with a Ba Hons in Design – Surface Pattern.

I worked as a designer for commercial companies but when I had my first child I decided that the nursery just had to have a Winnie The Pooh themed mural. As friends started to see my son’s room – my mural business began and it is the most rewarding and satisfying of jobs I have ever done.

As well as painting murals in people homes I have also been commissioned to produce murals for the National Health Service and other commercial properties, which have been featured in the local press.

Following our initial contact by phone, I would arrange to come and meet with you to view the room you intend to have the mural painted in. We would talk through your ideas, and at this stage if you needed inspiration I would also bring along ideas, pictures, and books to look at. For children’s rooms, every child has a favourite cartoon character, theme, TV character or book so this would be our starting point. If your child is old enough I always like to ask what they would like to see in their room so we make sure the mural makes everyone happy.

Once you have decided on the size and design of the mural that’s when I can provide you with an exact cost. My price is always inclusive of all materials and time – so no matter how long it takes me to complete the mural – the price will remain exactly as quoted (prices start from as little as £65).

When I come to paint the mural – the whole design is sketched out on the wall, ceiling or cupboard etc. in pencil first, and it is at this stage that I always make sure the client is completely happy with how the design looks before any painting begins – as once the design is painted changes are hard to make!

Your custom hand painted mural can usually be finished within a few days depending on size and detail level. The paints I use are waterproof and non-toxic and are therefore ideal to be used around children and babies.
